Journey through the soul of Sklithro-Zelenich – its people, customs, and hidden stories. This is a place where memory lives and history breathes.
Welcome to the Living Soul of Sklithro (Zelenich)
Step into a village where the zurla (a traditional double-reed woodwind instrument, often played in pairs with the tapan (drum) during village festivals, weddings, and seasonal celebrations like Lazaritsa or St. George’s Day) still echoes through the chestnut trees, where wedding songs and laments carry the voices of generations. Here, history is not forgotten—it dances in the stories, customs, and rituals we preserve. Come often, as we continue to gather the threads of our shared memory, weaving them into a tapestry of living folklore.
Sklithro, Florina (Greece) is a village that has an oral history that dates back to just after 1395 C.E. For over 500 years it was called Zelenic. After the Balkan Wars of 1912-13, the area was annexed by Greece and in 1927 the name was changed to Sklithro. Before 1395 the inhabitants of Sklithro-Zelenic came from just over the mountain to the east on Lake Zazari. This settlement was called Sebalci. As you explore the history section of this website (going from Neolithic Times to the Present) you will not only find out about the people and the place, but also be connected to a history of continuity of the Macedonian people of the region that was known as Eordaea in ancient times.
